VITA Volunteers

How do the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and (MFT) programs help our community?

In 2015, VITA and MFT volunteers helped return $1.3 million in Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and more than $3.9 million in refunds to 3,182 families in our community. The total impact of these programs was $5.1 million!

As a VITA or MFT Volunteer, YOU can be part of that impact. Learn a new skill, build your resume, and support your community! Serve as a greeter, tax assistant, or tax preparer.

Reasons to become a VITA volunteer:
- NO prior experience is necessary!
- FREE guided training and certification through the IRS is provided by United Way.
- Flexible schedule, giving 1 to 5 hours per week during tax season (January- April).
- Continuing Education credits available for Tax Professionals.

To view detailed descriptions of each volunteer position, click on the links below:

Greeter: Greets clients as they arrive and ensures that clients have all required documents. Greeters will need to complete a brief online IRS ethics training and attend the pre-season orientation in January.

Tax Preparer:
Prepares clients' tax returns based on certification level obtained through the IRS training modules. United Way will provide the resources and materials needed to complete both online and in-person training. The online portion of the training can be completed at the volunteer's pace, and several "classroom" training sessions will be held in the fall. Tax Preparer volunteers will also need to attend the pre-season orientation in January.

Tax Assistant: Assists clients who choose to complete their own taxes on at a VITA site. Assistants must complete an in-person training session in the fall and attend the pre-season orientation in January.

VITA site locations include Pensacola State College Main, Milton, and Warrington campuses, and St. Sylvester's Catholic Church in Navarre. Learn more about site location hours of operation and open dates.
