How does the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program help our community?
In 2014, VITA volunteers helped return $1.5 million in Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and more than $3.3 million in refunds to 2,672 families in our community. The total impact of this program was $4.6 million!
As a VITA Volunteer YOU can be part of that impact. Learn a new skill, build your resume, and help your community! As a VITA volunteer, you will:
- Volunteer in the role of a Tax Preparer, Tax Assistant, or Greeter
- Commit one to four hours per week from January through April
- Receive official IRS training and certification
- Expand your knowledge of federal tax return procedures
- Receive CRA credit (for depository institutions only)
- Serve local citizens and help stimulate the local economy

Tax Preparer: Prepares clients' tax returns based on certification level obtained through the IRS training modules. United Way will provide the resources and materials needed to complete both online and in-person training. The online portion of the training can be completed at the volunteer's pace, and several "classroom" training sessions will be held in the fall. Tax Preparer volunteers will also need to attend the pre-season orientation in January.
Greeter: Greets clients as they arrive and ensures that clients have all required documents. Greeters will need to complete a brief online IRS ethics training and attend the pre-season orientation in January.
Tax Assistant: Assists clients who choose to complete their own taxes on MyFreeTaxes.com at a VITA site. Assistants must complete an in-person training session in the fall and attend the pre-season orientation in January.
VITA site locations include Pensacola State College Main, Milton, and Warrington campuses, and St. Sylvester Catholic Church in Navarre. Learn more about site location hours of operation and open dates.
